All the same, where am I going with this? Arsenalii is an Arsenal blog right? True it is. Bone, flesh and blood. So much so that as far it matters, at Arsenalii we see it this way: In Arsene Wenger a Bob Marley, a Richard Branson if you like. A game changer, a legend, definitely not the usual nor the contemporary.
As is often the case, rather in keeping with Plato's thoughts in “The Republic” , for the sake of a chance at Justice, success in one dimension ought be limited by lack of or limited dominion in another. Last time I checked, Bob Marley was not the top selling artist of all time neither-as mentioned above- is Richard Branson the richest of them all.
Have it another way and as Kanye West asks in his hit single Power “How can one man have so much power?” If reports are true, in Ricardo Alvarez another signature Arsene Wenger move. Sample this, on Wenger's end season admission to failings at defending set pieces, the obvious translation that flew around in the press was that Arsenal was in the summer transfer market in search of a 'tall center back' and as is customary, a slew of names started flying around.
We at Arsenalii could only laugh at some at the suggestions, worse still was the misconception being ferried down the press gravy train. Excuse me, but Wenger is no Sir Alex type. Going for the obvious like Young - perfect for the predictable unfortunately so labeled 'English' game of hoofs, puffs and endless runs to the corner flag to whip in crosses
I repeat, if reports are true, In Ricardo Alvarez, vintage Arsene Wenger. Need a tall player? Why not go for a 6'2 attacking midfielder, versatile enough to play anywhere across the midfield with ball skills, trickery and pace to boot?
As always, questions everywhere on the wisdom if such a move. It has risk written all over it: a player untried in the English game, from a league less competitive than Europe's loudest domestic league, thrown right into the deep end of Europe elite competition to square with the Goliaths of that world- the likes of Messi and the Barcelona army of gladiators, Real Madrid's Ronaldo and Inter's Samuel Eto'o.
Truth is, failure or success make little difference if you happen to be a non contemporary member of society. You still get stick either way. What makes the difference, what makes only a select few a Bob Marley, a Richard Branson or a Arsene Wenger is religious adherence to one's convictions, methods or philosophies if you must. Ricardo Alvarez , once again if reports are true represents another stroke in Arsene Wenger's yet to be finished mural.
As was the case with Koscienly, Cesc Fabregas,Viera, Henry, Pires, Varmaeelen, RVP....literary the whole bunch of nondescript arrivals turned super stars during Wenger's reign at Arsenal hardly anything on the public domain of this Ricardo Alvarez guy. Scattered you tube flicks which hardly tell enough and only the openly editable Wikipedia to rely on.
Nonetheless from the scrapings available, expect the usual mentioned above and more- attitude, venom in the shot and surprise surprise no assists! This 23yr old Argentinian danger man in his entire three year or so senior professional career has had no assists! That to me tells a whole different story.
Before I get carried away as the Ricardo Alvarez signing is yet to be confirmed, one thing am sure; trust Wenger. Trust Arsene to unveil a new star.( Dear reader I am yet to get over Varmaelen. Oh My! What a gem. Only hope that long lay off didn't take the sparkle off that one)
